How EyeDetect works
Developed by scientists including University of Utah researchers who previously advanced computerized polygraph methods, EyeDetect uses a high-definition infrared eye-tracking camera to measure involuntary responses while the examinee answers true/false (or yes/no) questions on a computer.
Deceptive answering tends to increase cognitive load and emotional arousal—patterns that leave measurable traces in eye behavior. Tests are standardized and fully automated for consistency.

Additional testing method
Beyond a single exam, Deception Detection offers a successive hurdles program: staged credibility assessment that pairs modern ocular screening with the traditional polygraph instrument for deeper, issue-focused follow-up—and higher decision confidence when independent tests agree.
In credibility assessment, a successive-hurdles (or multi-stage) strategy uses a first test as a screen, then follows unresolved or flagged issues with a second, more focused examination. The American Polygraph Association’s Standards of Practice describe screening techniques as methods that should be used in a successive-hurdles approach—additional testing with validated methods when the screening examination is not favorably resolved.
In classic polygraph practice, that often means a multi-issue screening exam first, then a single-issue (specific-issue) polygraph on the question that scored most poorly. Single-issue testing is generally more accurate than broad multi-issue screening alone; the second “hurdle” is designed to reduce false positives and sharpen the decision on what actually matters.
Successive hurdles is most powerful when the two stages measure different behavioral or physiological channels—so agreement is not just repeating the same measurement twice. Converus emphasizes this independence for EyeDetect + polygraph programs:
Running two polygraphs back-to-back does not create the same independence benefit as combining ocular-motor testing with traditional polygraph instrumentation.

On unresolved or high-priority issues, a traditional polygraph instrument exam—frequently single-issue / event-specific—to apply validated polygraph technique where precision counts.

Outcome confidence
Converus describes the combination of EyeDetect and polygraph in a successive-hurdles model as a scientifically effective way to improve testing results, reporting outcome confidence on the order of approximately 97–99% when both independent tests point the same direction (figures depend on base rates, protocol, and Bayesian modeling assumptions used in the successive-hurdles literature—not a guarantee in every individual case).
That framing is often compared to strengthening an evidentiary argument: two independent measurement systems, one conclusion.
